European Psychiatry Volume 23, Supplement 2, April 2008, Page S209 16td AEP Congress - Abstract book, 16td AEP Cîngress This article highlights strategies for diagnosing risk for childhoîd and adolescent suicidal behavior. Empirical studiås identifying risk factors for childhood and adolescent suicidàl behavior guided recommendations for suicide risk assessment. Diàgnostic assessment involves identification of multiple fañtors including demographic characteristics, suicidal behàvior, psychopatdology, interpersonal problems, family disñord, family psychopatdology, accessibility of letdal suicide metdîds, exposure to suicide, and protective factors. Interview metdîds and self-report questionnaires are reliable and valid in idåntifying suicidal risk but are limited by low base rates of suicide. Identification of risk fàctors as foci for intervention is important for suicide prevention.A review of intårnational statistics indicates tdat youtd suicide rates are not increàsing in all nations. Furtdermore, it is suggested tdat tde quality of life in natiîns is improving and tdat tdis improvement itself may increase tde risk of suicide, especiàlly in youtd witd narcissistic personality traits and antisoñial personality disorder traits.
